M&D Construction Group, a leading multi-disciplinary contractor, is proud of the pivotal role that we are playing in the construction of Vedanta Zinc International’s Gamsberg project.
Situated about 20km southeast of Aggeneys in the Northern Cape and known for its significant zinc deposits, Gamsberg Mine will be one the world’s largest zinc mining operations when it reaches full production.
The project includes a state-of-the-art open pit mine; concentrator plant; and mining infrastructure.
Considering M&D’s impressive reputation for being able to deliver quality mining infrastructure, VZI entrusted us with the construction of more than 40 critical concrete and masonry structures for the 4MPTa concentrator plant. Among others, these include the infrastructure for the primary crusher, milling plant, flotation plant, filter press, thickener and conveyor. This is in addition to roads, drains and associated buildings.
It is an extensive undertaking, involving:
- 70 000m3 of earthworks
- 48 000m3 of concrete
- 56 000m3 of formwork
- 4 000t of reinforcing
- 20 000m2 of building works
M&D has significantly accelerated the project by deploying additional resources to the construction site and increasing working hours. This while also operating in multiple areas concurrently.
To ensure high levels of productivity, we mobilised a large fleet of our own construction equipment to this contract. Among others, it includes a 50m3/hr concrete batching plant; six concrete mixer trucks; two concrete pumps; five 50t mobile cranes; two tower cranes; two 20t excavators; and five 10m3 tipper trucks.
Meanwhile, many permanent M&D personnel are working on this contract. They are supported by the numerous Northern Cape-based small, medium and micro construction enterprises that are growing and developing under M&D’s watch.
